Cambodia Calls for Renewed Global Commitment to Achieve a Mine-Free World

Phnom Penh, June 27, 2024 – Cambodia is advocating for renewed global cooperation to eliminate the threat of landmines. Senior Minister Dr. Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Mine Authority and President of the 2024 Ottawa Convention, made the call during his address at the Closing Ceremony of Political Dialogue in Wilton Park, London, on June 26, 2024. The dialogue focused on ensuring the success of the upcoming 5th Review Meeting and the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World.

Dr. Ly Thuch highlighted the discussions held from June 24 to 26, 2024, where participants reviewed the Oslo Action Plan's status, identifying challenges and opportunities while brainstorming creative solutions to bolster collaborative efforts. He emphasized the need for stakeholders to continue their joint efforts and to forge practical solutions for implementation challenges, ensuring effective and efficient use of resources.

Additionally, Dr. Thuch called for sustained international cooperation and shared sacrifice to create a world free of landmines. He outlined the goals of the forthcoming Siem Reap-Angkor Action Plan, which aims to build on the successes and lessons of the Oslo Action Plan and the discussions at Wilton Park, to ensure ongoing progress towards a mine-free world.

Dr. Thuch also expressed gratitude to all participants of the Wilton Park political dialogue for their active engagement and commitment to the shared goal of a mine-free world, praising the gathering as a demonstration of global partnership strength.
